My name is Rowan and I’ve been enjoying landscape photography since my teenage years (a while back already)! With this book I hope to inspire and guide you through the art of capturing landscapes, whether it be in your home country or far abroad. For me, as a geoscientist, my photography and videography helps me to fully embrace the geologic past of a landscape. By bringing my camera into these places, it helps me to focus on the details that define how a landscape has become what it is at present. Nearly every landscape, especially those rugged ones, have a rich history and have often seen many stages of appearance before they have evolved to what they look like on the work I create today.
To embrace and learn about those places, I believe it is key to spend more time than “just a visit”, to witness and unravel the natural wonders of a landscape and capture the details it holds within.

Part 1
Everything about light direction, color and mood of a photograph.
How to orient your camera with respect to the sun?
What conditions of weather impact color, when to get out and why a blue sky might not be what you are looking for.
What are you trying to convey to your observer? How do you bring that mood across?
Part 2
How do you help guide the observer's eyes? What really draws someone "into" your photograph? This section is about how to find those paths, defining objects that are relevant and positioning your subject so it adds to the overall image. There's also a separate section about Minimalism, where we discuss what makes a strong photo in absence of any lines.
Part 3
In this last section, we discuss everything about layers in a landscape composition. How to create depth, what are good foregrounds and backgrounds and why do you actually need a foreground?
We also touch on subjects and how subjects can enhance a shot (or not) and the scale of those subjects relative to the overall image.
